3 Weight Loss Rules That Should Be Broken

February 26, 2013

I know this sounds drastic, but even experts are confirming that many common weight-loss rules people live by are actually meant to be broken. In fact, according to a study published in the International Journal of Obesity, people with a more flexible approach to eating, allowing themselves a few moments to indulge, had a better record of keeping weight off and maintaining a healthy weight than those dieters who went all out. So to all you dieters out there, it’s okay to have that cookie every once in a while. If you don’t, you could end up indulging more later on. Some rules are meant to be broken and we’ve got the lowdown on the specific weight-loss rules you should be tossing out.

Rule #1: Eat 5 Small Meals a Day

This is a weight loss rule that we’ve been hearing about for years. People have been saying that eating five small meals throughout the day will keep you from overeating and help your metabolism burn fat. However, this is a hard rule to keep up with, especially if you’re someone who has a busy schedule without many breaks in the day. Finding the time to make three meals a day is hard enough! Take it from Renee Melton, director of nutrition services for the mobile weight-loss program Sensei. Her schedule doesn’t allow for five meals a day, so she fits in three healthy square meals per day.

Rule #2: Ignore Red Meat

According to Jonny Bowden, Ph.D., weight-loss coach and author of “The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth,” protein is what keeps you full because it takes your body longer to digest. Having a hamburger every once in a while can give you the dose of protein you need and keep you from overeating later on. Bowden does, however, recommend you stick to lean meats like top round, sirloin, and tenderloin.

Rule #3: Don’t Eat Late at Night

Thankfully, this is a weight loss rule that is meant to be broken. Author of “Dr. Ann’s 10-Step Diet: A Simple Plan for Permanent Weight Loss and Lifelong Vitality,” Ann G. Kulze sits down to eat dinner at about 9 o’clock at night. The truth is, calories aren’t consumed any differently if you eat them at 9 p.m. or 9 a.m. Calories are calories. How much you eat, however, may make a difference. If you do eat dinner late at night, then that’s one way to ensure that you won’t be late-night snacking on any sweet treats. One rule that should never be broken is to always partake in regular exercise.
